Real estate agents, whether they’re showing a penthouse in the city, a cottage in the country or a house in the suburbs often find themselves in situations that could compromise their personal safety. While real estate might not be the first profession that comes to mind when we think of potentially dangerous jobs, there’s a growing recognition of the unique risks they face. Self Defense training is fast becoming and essential tool for every agent.
Real Estate agents face multiple risks in their daily routines. Hosting open houses or private viewings with unknown individuals, venturing into remote or unoccupied properties or areas with poor cell service can expose them to unforeseen dangers. Such scenarios elevate the likelihood of encountering malicious individuals, making agents more vulnerable to potential threats.
Benefits of Self-Defense Training for Real Estate Agents:
1) Enhanced Personal Safety
Knowing how to react in a threatening situation can reduce the risk of injury. The aim of self defense isn’t necessarily to overpower an attacker but to create an opportunity to escape.
3) Improved Awareness
These trainings don’t just teach physical defense techniques but also situational awareness. Being more observant of ones surrounding and learning how to read potential dangers can deter potential threats.
2) Boosted Confidence
Having self defense skills can boost an agents’ confidence, making them feel safer and more at ease during showings.
4) Professionalism
By equipping oneself with these skills, agents also show clients that they are serious about their profession and their safety. This can boost trust and rapport.
Steps to Staying Safe:
1) Always Inform Someone
Before showing a property always let someone know where you’re going and who you are meeting.
3) Stay Charged
Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged and easily accessible.
5) Consider carrying a non-lethal weapon
Stun Guns, Pepper Sprays and stabbing devices can help protect you in a self defense situation.
7) Exit strategy
Always position yourself near exits during showing and avoid getting cornered. If possible, allow the client to look around a second floor on their own.
2) Vet Clients
Wherever possible, meet clients at the office first or ask for identification. It never hurts to look them up online beforehand and see what information is readily available.
4) Safety Apps
Consider using safety apps that can track your location and send alerts if you’re in danger.
6) Handgun Training
If you are an agent that carries a handgun, get appropriately trained and practice your skills regularly in every situation.
